Instructions for Vaccine Inoculation, Commonly Called Vaccination (Philadelphia, 1807)
Early American vaccination involved the transfer of diseased flesh (pustules and scabs) from one person to another. Did it cause illness? Yes, which meant it was working! What follows is the instructions published in 1807 for inoculating a person, beginning with collecting ‘vaccine matter’ from diseased tissue.1
